Ivy League

The Ivy League is a collegiate collegiate athletic conference comprising sports teams from private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. It was established in 1954 to promote fair competition amongst student athletes with similar backgrounds, interests, and goals. Seven of the league's members institutions, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale, were among the nine colonial colleges and universities established before the Revolutionary War (the other two being Rutgers University and the College of William and Mary). Cornell University, which was established after the American Civil War, was included as a result of its proximity to member institutions and similar admissions criteria, academic focus, and need-based financial aid.

The term "Ivy League" connotes academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism, all of which are consistent with the aims, goals, and values of Kappa Alpha Psi. The following is a listing of the fraternity's chapters at Ivy League member institutions.

Trivia[]

  • Only seven charters were awarded to Ivy League member schools. Students enrolled at Harvard University are initiated at, and affiliated with, Theta Iota, whose charter is based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • Members of the fraternity enrolled at Dartmouth College from 1982 through 1987 were initiated at Theta Iota. They are considered dual alumni of both Theta Iota and Mu Chi.
  • The first charter awarded to an Ivy League member institution was Iota Phi at Cornell University. There is no charter at Harvard University. At the time the Omicron and Delta Eta charters were awarded to Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively, the Ivy League had yet to come into existence.
  • Members of the fraternity enrolled at Yale University in 1986 were initiated at Lambda Xi. They are considered dual alumni of both Lambda Xi and Nu Gamma.
